Last Thursday, November 26th, did indeed turn out to be an historic day in the history of Tirelton National School when the school’s football team won their first ever County Sciath na Scol Football title defeating a very worthy opponent in Ballyvongane N.S. Despite the recent heavy rain, Páirc Uí Chaoimh was in excellent condition and what a thrill it was at about 12.45 when Tirelton emerged from the tunnel and raced on to the field to a great cheer from our huge group of supporters. Having gone through the pre-match routine of team introductions, photographs and warm-up, the game began. Displaying great focus and concentration, Tirelton played with a superb level of confidence, purpose and teamwork and led by seven points at halftime. Two goals early in the second half set them on the road for ultimate glory, and though Ballyvongane narrowed the margin to five points at one stage, two late points sealed the victory for Tirelton. It was indeed a very proud moment for everyone when captain Kevin Murphy led the panel up those famous steps to receive the cup, along with individual medals for each player. After some more photographs it was then time to head for the Oriel Court Hotel, where everyone enjoyed some post match refreshments and the chance to discuss and analyse the triumph. Indeed such was the support for the school, that extra seating had to be brought in to accommodate the crowd. It was just one of those great days in the school’s and in the community’s life. Great thanks are due to the many people who contributed to the occasion in so many different ways and particularly those who took time to decorate the village with colourful banners and signs. It made the whole day one never to be forgotten.Shauna Buckley (Ardnaneen)
